With veganism becoming such a fad in recent years, we were a bit sceptical of the ‘plant-based’ movement when we first learned about it. That is, until we really got to understand it better.
By definition, a plant-based diet relies heavily on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. It also suggests a more ‘wholesome’ approach rather than being restrictive, focusing on what to include rather than what to eliminate.
When it comes to skincare, our first memories of what you could call ‘skincare’ include our grandmothers applying home-made masks of chickpea flour, milk, and turmeric to our face (as most brown women can attest to). So creating a plant-based skincare brand today shouldn’t have come as a huge surprise to us. Man Face uses 6 botanical oils, and our Face Wash (soon to launch) is made with Rosemary Hydrosol, and a Coconut-derived surfactant called Coco Glucoside.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with synthetic ingredients – in fact they are often able to replicate effects of natural ingredients with exact precision. But if resources in the world are not a constraint, there is something special about using something ‘whole,’ rather than artificial.
We liken it to eating a fast food meal rather than something home-made. The latter somehow feels more nutritious, wholesome, and ‘connected’ to the planet.
