Skin Health Lessons from a Month in Bombay (Part 1)

September 17, 2019 347 Comments

If you’ve noticed we’ve been quiet lately it’s because we just got back from 5 busy weeks in India! South Asia feels like a hub for ‘natural’ remedies and millions of small businesses, and we have a lot of learnings to share.

Lesson #1: Being resourceful in the kitchen is one of the easiest (and cheapest) ways to take care of your skin

As I discussed with another founder this morning, DIY seems to be engrained in many Eastern cultures. Whether it’s because bigger ‘global’ brands came to us a bit later, forcing us to be resourceful and shrewd, or because there is an abundance of natural ingredients available at our fingertips, I couldn’t help get into the DIY spirit quite quickly.

Living in London, when I feel my pores are a bit clogged or that my skin is in need of a bit of ‘extra cleaning,’ I’m most likely to pop into a shop or do some research on the latest and greatest new skincare brand. Sometimes this is a great process, but other times, there are simple things we can find right in our kitchen cupboard to achieve the same effect.

Quick and Easy Facial Scrub:

  • Mix 1 TB of ghee or oil + 1 teaspoon of finely ground salt (sugar is great too!) + 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric.
  • Stir mixture in a small bowl and gently ‘scrub’ your face. Wash off with a facial cleanser. Leaves your skin feeling super smooth and refreshed.
  • For men especially who tend to have thicker and more oily skin than women, it's important to exfoliate at least once a week.

Hydrating Mask:

  • Mix 1 TB of yoghurt with 1 tsp of honey.
  • Stir mixture together and apply to face. Leave on for 10 minutes. Wash off with water.
  • Insider tip: you can use this on your hair too! While oil is amazing for dry hair, sometimes it also needs a bit of extra hydration - for which yoghurt does the trick perfectly. For hair: leave on for 10 minutes then wash off normally with shampoo and conditioner.

Acne Treatment Mask:

  • Mix 2 teaspoons of chickpea flour + 2 teaspoons of yoghurt + ¼ teaspoon of turmeric
  • Stir mixture together into a paste the texture of hummus. Leave on until dry (about 20 minutes). Wash off with water.
  • The high zinc content of chickpea flour helps with acne, and aids absorption excess sebum in the skin. Turmeric is anti-inflammatory. Leaves you with a fresh and glowing feeling.

What's your favourite kitchen tip for skin or hair health? Let us know in the comments below, and stay tuned for tomorrow’s lesson on the importance of internal health!

L'Oreal Men Expert Moisturiser: Under the Cap [Part 5]

Most people use some form of moisturiser, or are familiar with what it “does” i.e. moisturise the skin. The composition of your skin’s outer layer – the stratum corneum – is affected by environmental factors, age, and even genetics. If you shave often or your face is otherwise irritated, your moisturiser can help soothe or calm the skin as well.
