Best Skincare Routine for London Summers

If you’re in London right now, you might feel a little confused about how best to take care of your skin during the summer. Some days, you're feeling cool as a cucumber, and the next you're sweating bullocks on the tube ride home.

We know you still want to maintain your youthful glow and protect against negative effects, but what’s the best approach? Have no fear. Below is a simple, minimal skincare routine for you to try this summer. Let us know what you think!

In the AM Sun

one numberCLEANSE

  • Wet your face and rub a pea-sized amount of cleanser to your skin to clear off dead skin cells and make sure the remaining products have a clean canvas to go onto. Your skin should feel clean but not super ‘tight’ after this first step, and you can easily do it while in the shower.
  • Pro Tip: we really like gel cleansers because they are usually gentle and cooling!

two numberBALANCE/HYDRATE

  • If you have a spray like Rose Water or Orange Blossom, spritz it on your face to hydrate and balance out your skin’s pH. Quick science lesson reminder - the pH scale goes from one (most acidic) to fourteen (most alkaline). Healthy skin is normally slightly acidic with a pH of 4.5-5.5, and cleansers are often alkaline which shifts the balance off.
  • Pro Tip: You can definitely buy a fancy toner but make sure it doesn’t have any alcohol in it, which can really dry out your skin. We find rose water from the pharmacy (again make sure you check the ingredients) works great!

three numberMOISTURISE

  • Use a light moisturiser to protect against dirt and pollution. Use however much feels good to you. You can even use a lightweight oil like Talisman’s Man Face, and apply to damp skin so it doesn’t feel too heavy for the daytime.
  • Pro Tip: even if you have oily skin, it’s still necessary to moisturise after washing. Just use less of the product!

four numberPROTECT

  • Finish off with an SPF. Exposure to sun without protection can lead to accelerated signs of aging (wrinkles and saggy skin), and increase the chances of skin cancer.
  • Pro Tip: you might not always ‘feel’ like you need sunscreen, particularly if you’re a darker skin tone and don’t burn. But science and medicine say it’s necessary, and it’s one of those things we do as a long-term investment in our skin health. You can use a moisturiser with SPF but it’s more effective to use a separate SPF after you moisturise.

In the PM Moon

one numberCLEANSE

  • Same as in the morning, wet your face and apply a pea-sized amount of cleanser to your face.

two numberMOISTURISE

  • Apply a lightweight yet nourishing oil like Talisman’s Man Face so your skin can regenerate itself during sleep. At night your skin is doing more ‘work’ so it can generally tolerate something thicker than a lotion.

BONUS

After the gym: give your face a quick rinse if you can so that sweat doesn’t clog up your pores and the bacteria doesn’t get inside.

Twice/thrice a week: use a gentle scrub or exfoliator to clear out clogged pores.

We’re so glad to hear that, Abbas! Let us know how you get on, and remember it might take a few weeks to notice any changes. Though if you break out from any products within a few days of use, probably best to take a look at the ingredients and see if you’re allergic to anything. Happy Summer-ing!

Most people use some form of moisturiser, or are familiar with what it “does” i.e. moisturise the skin. The composition of your skin’s outer layer – the stratum corneum – is affected by environmental factors, age, and even genetics. If you shave often or your face is otherwise irritated, your moisturiser can help soothe or calm the skin as well.
